What is Koningsdag?

Koningsdag (King's Day) is the national holiday of the Netherlands, celebrating the birthday of King Willem-Alexander. Every year on 27 April, the entire country turns into one big festival. Cities, villages, canals, streets, and parks fill with music, food, markets, and celebrations.

Typical elements of Koningsdag include:

  • Live music and DJs

  • Outdoor bars and beer gardens

  • Street markets and games

  • Families and friends celebrating together

  • A very relaxed, festive atmosphere

It is a day when everyone celebrates together — young and old.

Why Everything is Orange 🧡

You will notice that many guests are dressed completely in orange.

Orange is the national color of the Netherlands because the Dutch royal family belongs to the House of Orange-Nassau. Wearing orange on Koningsdag shows national pride and creates a fun, festive atmosphere.

Expect to see:

  • Orange clothing

  • Orange hats, glasses, wigs and accessories

  • Dutch flags and decorations

  • Guests fully dressed in creative orange outfits

The more orange, the better!

The Dutch Vibe

The Dutch celebration style is open, friendly, and informal.

Guests are typically relaxed, social, and in a party mood. They enjoy chatting with staff, joking, dancing, and celebrating together.

For staff we encourage:

  • A friendly smile

  • A relaxed attitude

  • Not being overly formal

  • Being helpful and approachable

Dutch guests appreciate a warm, easygoing interaction. A smile and a bit of positive energy goes a long way.
