Our Mission
What is NedMalta?
NedMalta was founded on 13 January 2013 as a small Facebook community for Dutch-speaking people in Malta. What started as a simple way to help Dutch speakers connect with each other has grown into one of Malta's largest Dutch-speaking communities.
In 2016, NedMalta.com was launched to provide practical information about living, working, studying and travelling in Malta. Since then, the platform has expanded to include events, housing information, job opportunities, community support and local partnerships.
Today, NedMalta brings together Dutch and Belgian residents, students, interns, job seekers and visitors from across Malta.
Our mission remains the same as it was in 2013:
Connecting Dutch-speaking people in Malta and helping them make the most of their time on the island.
Whether you are moving to Malta, looking for work, planning an internship, searching for housing, or simply looking for a friendly community, NedMalta is here to help.
In Memory of Shannon Mak
NedMalta finds its roots in the community founded by Shannon Mak in 2013. What started as a small Facebook group helping Dutch-speaking people connect in Malta has grown into the community we know today.
Although Shannon sadly passed away in 2018, her vision of bringing people together continues to inspire NedMalta's volunteers, events and community activities.
Every friendship formed, event organised and person helped through NedMalta is part of the legacy she left behind.
Support & Assistance for Dutch Speakers in Malta
We believe in a strong community where people can rely on each other. That's why we provide free and voluntary assistance, including:
✅ Medical Assistance & Translation
If you need hospital care or medical help, we assist with translations, explain how the healthcare system works, and provide guidance on insurance options.
✅ Legal Help & Safety
We support Dutch speakers in filing police reports, finding legal assistance, and understanding their rights. Many interns and employees experience work-related issues, and we help them navigate and resolve these situations.
✅ Help with Unsafe Situations & Workplace Issues
Especially for young people and women, safety concerns can arise. We provide a listening ear and practical help so that everyone feels safe and secure in Malta.
✅ Issues with Internships, Work, or Housing?
We assist Dutch speakers who encounter problems with employers, landlords, or internship providers. With our experience and local contacts, we often help find quick and effective solutions.
💡 This support is entirely funded by the events and activities we organize and by advertising on the website. By participating in our events, you directly contribute to keeping this assistance available!
Giving Back – Supporting Charities in Memory of Shannon Mak
In 2018, Shannon Mak, a young Dutch woman, was tragically murdered in Malta by her ex-partner. In her memory, we actively support organizations that focus on women's rights and safety.
A percentage of NedMalta's profits and all donations go to:
❤️ Women's Rights Foundation – Advocating for women's rights and better protection against violence and harassment in Malta.
❤️ Blijf van m'n Lijf-huis – A shelter for women escaping domestic violence who have nowhere else to go.
❤️ Other initiatives that contribute to a safer and more just Malta.
With this support, we hope to help not only Dutch speakers in Malta but also contribute to a better society on the island.
